Harvey Pekar is file clerk at the local VA hospital. His interactions with his co-workers offer some relief from the monotony, and their discussions encompass everything from music to the decline of American culture to new flavors of jellybeans and life itself. At home, Harvey fills his days with reading, writing and listening to jazz. His apartment is filled with thousands of books and LPs, and he regularly scours Cleveland's thrift stores and garage sales for more, savoring the rare joy of a 25-cent find. It is at one of these junk sales that Harvey meets Robert Crumb, a greeting card artist and music enthusiast. When, years later, Crumb finds international success for his underground comics, the idea that comic books can be a valid art form for adults inspires Harvey to write his own brand of comic book. An admirer of naturalist writers like Theodore Dreiser, Harvey makes his American Splendor a truthful, unsentimental record of his working-class life, a warts-and-all self portrait. First published in 1976, the comic earns Harvey cult fame throughout the 1980s and eventually leads him to the sardonic Joyce Barber, a partner in a Delaware comic book store who end ups being Harvey's true soul mate as they experience the bizarre byproducts of Harvey's cult celebrity stature.

It is very difficult to tell people what this American Splendor Biography is because it is not like any other film. It is a comic drama, documentary, fiction, inspiration, and much more. All presented in a completely original. American Splendor the true story of a man trying to find their place in life. Problem is, this guy is a loser. Or at least that what he thinks of himself. It is a fact that he is not a loser, just lost. And he is not, but what life is. If you are tired of formula films, or Hollywood in general is likely to love this movie. Truly a masterpiece. Paul Giamatti should have received at least an Oscar nomination.

Innovative successful American Splendor combines fiction and reality in a fascinating and fun, winning awards at Cannes and Sundance, and demonstrate that the maximum life is quite complex (and endlessly fascinating) things. . . The story of Harvey Pekar features, like himself, as played by actor Paul Giamatti as comic book character that you created on the base itself. Pekar is downbeat, depressed, in a dead-end job of filing, rather bitter. His best friend is a self-confessed nerd. However, when the events of his life is summarized in the comic book snapshots that are intensely emotional, that seem to reach the disadvantaged, the poor functioning within each of us. We remain in a marriage that is so strange as it is. The originality of the material is reflected in its postmodern style of presentation, self-consciousness of the audience-handling mix seamlessly with the delivery of entertainment and art. Scenes from the establishment and mingled with taglines comics, storyboard, and the transition from interloping establish talks with the real Pekar andalusia players in contention. If this sounds pretentious, it is not - simply because it works so well and in a way. Created with love and very moving. Probably the first classic of 2003 and not to be missed, and for lovers of jazz / blues soundtrack a collector item. (See the International Film Festival in Edinburgh, I also had the privilege of seeing real-life Pekar, his wife and adopted daughter, along with Paul Giamatti, culminating a true multimedia experience haha!)

I thought this was going to be excellent based on the first hour or so - good humor subversive and building a good fellow latent resentment about normal life. I guess everyone felt that way. But I felt he lost his way after that - the cancer was too little too long and seriously. He sat easily with the rest of the film. And to be honest I could not warm to the real Harvey Pekar - compared with an actor that I felt a little pain in the proverbial ....

Yesterday I say through the American Splendor Biography movie Talk Cinema. Technically superb mix actors with real people who represent them. Both are excellent, and takes his realistic characterizations. In the film, portrays Giamatti as Pekar curmudgeon who becomes a cute and thoughtful. But we never get to see what makes Pekar interesting to their readers. We worship it but some are represented from the start Pekar is someone most of us do not want to continue talking to or about. He is a shlub without redeeming qualities. The Pekar we see is a self-absorbed hero to generations born after 1943.

I just saw this at an advanced stage of detection. I am not in the world of graphic novels, and was not aware of the protagonist of the story. I loved the mix of real-life Harvey and his friends. It is interesting to see the movie, the game and the real blinking back and forth. The portraits were quite good. The woman was part underdeveloped. Toby his friend could have been a story in itself, and I would have enjoyed it a great part of the film.

Different and this American Splendor movie is about a man on extravagant and quirky characters, but realistic. We are thrown into the world of comics and the grim vision of daily life shot in split screen, the only way in which reality is mixed with cartoons and real people and actors are merged together in a collage format - film, autobiography , cartoon stills, acting, film, theater and comedy. The final product is rather a convincing portrait of a man, a man with a crude and obvious rough edges that attracts both the public and cultural populist art independent producers. By the time the novelty is over, however, the uneven but sometimes almost seamless product has returned to its audience around abit, jerked sideways, and left with a satisfied, but perhaps not gradually significantly higher state of being.
